Seems
there has been some controversy regarding the
spinnaker used by Junto in the Chicago
to Mackinac Race in July. We campaign the boat with
Class sails - either with two 89 Sq Meter spinnakers
or as we did in this race, one 77 sm reacher and an
89 sm runner. The sail tags posted on this site for
hull 384 show the inventory for the boat. The huge
"whomper" is a new yellow 89 sm spinnaker
built by Doyle that just might be pretty fast. Being
yellow it looks big. While it probably seems
unbelievable, we managed to close a 30-minute lead
and pass the first place boat by sailing further
downwind with speed in a good breeze (gusts around
18) and big waves (2'). However, it's important to
know it took us about 7 hours! The other cool thing
is the sail's ability to pass a boat to leeward. We
were shocked as well, but the wind gods gave us a
puff at just the right moment and the rest is
history.

Hey
Stevie, John, Jud and the rest of the Doyle Sails J/105 Team,
Thanks for all of your efforts in supplying us
with your J/105 class sails in the narrow time frame
that we gave you. We had your Cross-cut class main,
D4 class jib, and a gorgeous black 89 kite. Your
tuning guide for the 105 was great and easy to
follow. After a collective total of about 3 hours of
sailing a 105 we went out for some fleet racing this
weekend in Bermuda. Pulled the sails out of the bags
on Saturday morning and went racing in about 12-14
knots. Had a few windward beats and a run with the
kite up and all looked great.
Sailed the first race and had good speed, but
were getting use to the angles downwind and end up a
close third. Next race we had some problems with the
the jib foil jumping out of the furling drum. Took
it apart and figured out that the forestay was
backing out of the drum. We tightened it back to the
mark, tightened the lock nut and put it back
together, just in time for the last race. (any
secrets on preventing this happening again?)
We came off the line just to leeward of the other
boats, and when the gun went that was the closest
they got to us the whole race. With the headstay in
locked the right place, the rig set up as per your
guide and the backstay on to the right settings, we
just took off. We were higher and faster on both
tacks. We had a good handle on the angles downwind
and ended up winning by 30 seconds over a 50 minute,
6 leg windward-leeward race course on the second
place boat. The third place guy was about 2 minutes
back of that. All of the other boats behind us were
using North Sails...
And they have been all been racing as a team for
2 to 7 years. We literally had 2 to 7 hours of
experience. Again it is a tribute to your design
program and the speed of your finished product. We
had very little knowledge of a 105 set-up period,
and your sails made us look like we had been doing
this for years. Fast out of the bag is all I have to
say for Doyle sails.
Thanks a million...
